Adnan Charara
Adnan Charara (born 1962) is a prominent Lebanese-American multimedia artist whose career spans more than four decades. Born in Lebanon to Lebanese parents, he spent his childhood in Sierra Leone and Lebanon before permanently moving to the U.S. in 1982 at the age of 19.
With a thirst to create since he was a child, he drew, painted, sculpted and assembled his way from Seattle to Boston and established his permanent artistic home in Detroit. Growing up as a foreigner across different continents deeply shaped his perspective, forcing him to adapt to diverse surroundings as an outsider. This early exposure directly informed his later artistic preoccupations with diversity, ethnicity, isolation, and acceptance, treated through a whimsical, vibrant, and humorous lens.
Adnan works in multiple mediums with several ideas at a time, treating his studio practice like a detail-oriented factory. His hard-working dedication is masked, however, by his whimsical and humorous treatment of serious subjects. . He transformed the historic Astro building that he acquired in 2011, into a multifunctional space housing a gallery, gift shop, storefronts and his studio and continues to focus his energy on both his artwork and his community involvement
Adnan has received recognition for his artistic and community contributions, including a Smithsonian Fellowship nomination and an honour from the Arab American Chamber of Commerce, alongside media attention, including a 2012 feature on PBS’s Arab-American Stories. In addition, he has served on the boards of several arts institutions, cementing his footprint as a community advocate.
His work has been held in public and institutional collections including the Detroit Institute of Arts, Arab American National Museum, Whistler House Museum of Art. It has also been exhibited all over the world from the United States to China, West Africa and the United Kingdom - namely, Six Degrees of Devastation (2024) at Black Box Gallery, Portland, The Bubble Gum Knows (2024) at Galerie Camille, Detroit, Osmosis I & II at Whitman College, USA, and Mountains of the Mind at the Wu Yongliang Art Museum, Ningbo, China. The Occupation of Memory at Maya Art Space Gallery marks his first presentation in the Arab World.
