Ghylan Safadi, born in 1977 in Sweida, Syria, is an accomplished artist whose work reflects profound personal and socio-political experiences. A graduate of Damascus University’s Faculty of Fine Arts in 2000, he founded the Kameh Institute in Sweida in 2008, focusing on theater and art education for children. In 2012, he relocated to Beirut, Lebanon, which deeply influenced his artistic expression. Initially characterized by vibrant colors, Safadi’s work shifted dramatically during the war. His art began to capture the stark realities of violence, despair, and displacement, rendered through monochromatic palettes and evocative imagery. He describes his process as salvaging memories and emotions, portraying the impact of war on individuals and communities. His graphic lines often depict mysterious figures and foreboding atmospheres, blending personal testimony with universal themes of human suffering and resilience. Safadi has participated in numerous international exhibitions, including at the Arab World Institute in Paris and events in London, Bahrain, Germany, and Japan. His works are housed in prestigious collections across Syria, Lebanon, France, the UK, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, and the U.S., underscoring his global impact. His art not only documents the psychological toll of conflict but also serves as a medium for reflection and healing.
