Raffi Tokatlian (born 1957) is a Lebanese-Armenian sculptor recognized for his figurative bronze sculptures that explore mythology, spirituality, memory, and the human condition. He studied at the Fine Arts School in Beirut before moving to Paris in 1981.Tokatlian was honored 4 times with the highest state and ministerial medals awarded by the Republic of Armenia for his outstanding artistic and cultural contributions. His work has entered multiple permanent collections such as Museum MoMA and Presidential Palace in Yerevan, Museum of Marathon, Greece and Sursock Museum, Lebanon. Inspired by 15th-century painters and influenced by Surrealists, he describes his style as "Surreal-Mythoclassical." Tokatlian has mastered a wide range of techniques, with a particular focus on the lost-wax method of bronze casting and patination. Tokatlian’s work is rooted in the human figure, shaped by a deep interest in myth, history, and lived experience. Having mastered the lost-wax bronze casting process himself, the physical transformation of material becomes inseparable from the emotional transformation inside the work. What gives his practice strength is the quiet authority within the work itself. The figures feel timeless and slightly otherworldly yet psychologically present; suspended somewhere between mythology, spirituality, and precarity. They do not seek attention rather, they hold presence through silence, weight, and emotional density. The work holds balance between strength and vulnerability; creating forms that people can connect to across cultures and experiences. Thus becoming a way of holding onto what is human, both physically and emotionally, in a constantly changing world.
